about us

Hi, I’m Katy Seppi, the host of the Childless Collective Summit. My four-year infertility journey ended with a hysterectomy in 2017. At the time, I didn’t have a single person I could talk to who was also involuntarily childless.

I decided to use my background in community organizing to create gathering places for childless people to connect, access support, and talk about the common themes that weave through our experiences.

The Childless Collective Summit is the event I wish I’d had when I first realized I had to let go of my dream of parenthood. Now in its fourth year, the summit will build on the previous three, which brought over 100 speakers and 8,500 attendees together virtually.

I decided to host the 2024 Childless Collective Summit in-person, because I know how special and rare it is for our community to have places to gather. In-person events are expensive and require a ton of labor to organize. As a one-person team, and being self-funded, the hundreds of hours I’ve dedicated to planning this event will be uncompensated.

I am however, hoping to at least cover the actual event costs and am looking for partners to help make this event sustainable for me to host and to expand access to attendees who are needing the support, but are not able to attend due to financial circumstances.

Anne

Since I met Katy Seppi four years ago, I’ve been in awe of her ability to create community and space for healing with our peers. The resources she created to help herself and in turn our broader community were critical to my own healing journey. These days, I call myself Childfree after infertility. Knowing Katy has been part of what made that possible for me. That is why I am so excited to have the opportunity to sponsor two registrations for the Childless Collective Summit in Charleston. I’m so happy knowing others will be able to experience this event, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to give back in this way.

Founder of Gateway Women & Author of Living the Life Unexpected

Having organised meetups and workshops to bring childless women together for over 13 years, I know how powerful it can be to finally breathe out; to feel safe, perhaps for the first time in many years, in a group setting, knowing that nobody is going to ask you any intrusive questions or make hurtful assumptions.

But if you think that feels good, getting together in a conference setting is something else and it feels more like a festival! And as you hear the shouts of delight from women who’ve only ever known each other online; or watch the silent tears of joy and recognition when attendees realise, ‘I belong here – I am not alone – there are other people like me – and they are awesome!’ is not something you, or your nervous system, will ever forget.

I’ve had the privilege of being at The Not Mom Summit in 2017 organised by Karen Malone Wright in Cleveland, and at each of the Storyhouse CHILDLESS events that have taken place in Chester, UK. And each one has opened and healed my heart at even deeper levels. The sheer joy of connection and recognition at these events is so powerful that sometimes it feels like it could take the roof off!

And that’s why not only I am flying 4,500 miles from Ireland to Charleston to experience that atmosphere again, but I’m also sponsoring a full weekend ticket for an attendee.

I’ve met so many wonderful North American women online over the last 13 years, and I can’t wait to meet many of you for the first time in person – and to help one more of you experience the indescribable magic that awaits us all in Charleston.

Advocate & Author of Do You Have Kids? Life When the Answer is No

Please do not miss this opportunity of a lifetime. This April in Charleston you can be surrounded by a group you’ll fit into right away—one where no one has children. Let me tell you, it’s a heady experience.

Back in 2015 and again in 2017 I had the chance to do just that, thanks to Karen Malone-Wright’s NotMom Summit in Cleveland. I arrived early, not sure what to do. As was one of the first signups for her gutsy gambit, I had no idea the powerful experience that was soon to be mine. I waited up in my room until I couldn’t stand it, both nervous and excited. I’ve come to trust that’s how I know I’m about to do something important. Karen’s team was still stuffing program materials when I walked up to the registration desk. I was warmly welcomed, and in that moment my life changed.

Gone were the jitters that someone surely would ask me if I had kids, then follow up with some stupid or hurtful line of questioning. Not a chance. We were all there for the same reasons. Grasping the importance of this experience was almost impossible to predict beforehand.

Once you’ve walked into that room, though, you’ll never feel alone or misunderstood in quite the same way. You’ll be surrounded by people you can talk to and feel part of immediately. Their stories will resonate with you, and you can tell your own as you feel ready. You’ll discover there are people like you everywhere.

Because I’m so certain how crucial it is to gather together in person, I contributed funds to cover registration for two Summit participants I don’t even know. Maybe others will make similar donations. I hope they do, because everyone deserves to enjoy the safety and comradery of being with like-situated women.

Due to a scheduling conflict, I can’t be there with you myself this April. But I will be thinking about you every day, delighted you’re all together in Charleston.

With love and gratitude for your courage,

–  Kate
